Commentator’s call

Robbie Thomson

“For me, Macarthur were a big disappointment last year. They’d been semi-finalists the year before, they were looking good then that they had that COVID break of six weeks. Word got out that Ante Milicic was out at the end of the season and that had a negative effect across the whole squad.

“They still have an excellent squad, players like Danny De Silva, Daniel Arzani and Al Hassan Toure, as well as an old-fashioned target man in Anthony Carter.

If Dwight Yorke can inspire those players, it has all the trappings of being something really successful this year.

Ex-player’s view

Ivan Franjic

I expect Macarthur FC to be right up there this season. They have a lot of talented young players and speed on the wing, which is important in the A-League.

“With Uli Davila playing in behind, he can always create something from nothing, and he is a scoring threat. They have Al Hassan Toure, who is very fast and dangerous and he’s scored a few in the Australia Cup.

“Big Anthony Carter, who returns from Europe, is another option and Lachy Rose can play up there too.

“Craig Noone is quality, each season he scores and creates and in Daniel Arzani, Noone and Toure, they have pace and skilful dribblers who can be a handful for opponents.

“Arzani has come back from overseas, and has a point to prove. He’s very skilful and talented as we saw when he burst onto the scene at Melbourne City and the Socceroos.

“And Jake Hollman is my player to watch. He’s a good skilful young player whose dribbling often seems effortless.”
