Bulls land former Benfica striker for 2022-23 ALM season

Macarthur FC have lured Australian-born striker Anthony Carter home after more than a decade spent abroad, with the 191cm spearhead signing a one-season deal with the Bulls.

Formerly on the books of Portuguese giants Benfica via their B team, Carter enjoyed his most fruitful stint of his career at Academic Viseu in the Portuguese second tier, scoring 15 goals in more than 60 appearances.

Carter joins from Thai club Bangkok United, after bagging three goals and two assists from 19 appearances (eight starts) as his side secured a third-place finish in the 2021-22 Thai League 1 campaign.

After an early off-season exodus, Macarthur FC have enjoyed a fruitful recruitment spell, acquiring the signatures of Carter, Kearyn Baccus, Jonathan Aspropotamitis and Jerry Skotadis within the last five days.

As the squad continues to take shape under new head coach Dwight Yorke, Carter has expressed his excitement at returning to Australia and work under the Manchester United legend.

“It’s good to be home as I haven’t played in Australia in 13 years so I’m excited to be here and part of this project,” Carter told club media.

“I think coming here is a really good step for me in my career and to experience the competition here in Australia is something I’ve never experienced before so it’ll be exciting.

“As a striker, having Dwight Yorke as my coach you can’t get better. I’m looking forward to learning from him and how he wants to play and then doing my best to put that out onto the pitch.”

The Bulls Group CEO Sam Krslovic added: “Anthony brings a lot of attributes to the squad and club. It’s exciting times at the Bulls and I believe we have a talented group of football players who can bring quality football to the competition.

“We look forward to seeing Anthony showcase his talent in the A-League and see what he can bring to the club.”
