WANDERERS HOPE ONCE MORE AFTER RUDAN’S RADICAL SURGERY
Head coach: Mark Rudan
Stadium: CommBank Stadium
2021-22 position: 10th
Western Sydney’s finals drought extended to a fifth season as Carl Robinson was replaced in January, with Rudan earning the full-time job during the campaign.
Commentator’s call
Simon Hill
“Every year we say the same thing – on paper they look good. And every year it then turns into disappointment for the fans, in a vicious cycle. So at some point Western Sydney have to break that, and to be fair this does look like a squad with pedigree.
“Mark Rudan has signed some excellent players, and really there are no excuses – the training ground is excellent, the stadium is excellent.
For me the first few weeks until the break for the World Cup is key – if they can get off to a good start then anything is possible.
Ex-player’s view
Robbie Cornthwaite
“There’s very much a new team, new environment type of mentality. We know they’ve brought in a lot of players – and in a way that maybe changes the mindset of the team. They’re saying it’s a really player-driven winning mentality, and the players are the ones creating a positive environment on a daily basis.
“That said, we know we’ve seen this before from the Wanderers. It’s what they do on the park that’s going to matter. One guy who is going to be under pressure is Mark Rudan. You’d think this is his big opportunity, if he wants to have a really successful coaching career then he needs to make the most of this.
“He’s got the team that he wants, he’s rebuilt the team, we’ve seen it happen at the Wanderers with other managers where they rebuild the team and it hasn’t worked out. It has to work out this time. They need to start well.
Top four for Western Sydney, or it’s probably been another poor season. They’ve got the squad, I think it’s time for them to actually live up to some expectations.
