Western Sydney Wanderers have secured the services of Brandon Borrello for the next two seasons, with the Socceroos forward back in the Isuzu UTE A-League after five years spent in Germany.
Borrello, 27, returns to the league in which he accrued 75 appearances over four seasons for Brisbane Roar between 2013 and 2017. A move abroad to 1 FC. Kaiserslautern was to follow for Borrello; after 36 appearances for the German club he penned a three-year deal at SC Freiberg, going out on loan to Fortuna Düsseldorf before securing a permanent move to Dynamo Dresden in July, 2021.
One year on, the new Wanderers recruit returns Down Under with nine Socceroos caps to his name, and an eagerness to strive for instant success at his new club.
“I just want to say thank you to the Wanderers for the massive opportunity to play for such a club,” Borrello told club media. “The atmosphere, the coach and the team is what has me most excited about coming back to Australia. I think it’s a great fit for me and I can’t wait to get back.
“I want to hit the ground running and get on the level of my teammates as fast as I can. I think with the team that has been built by the coaching staff, it’s completely up to us as we have the quality and we want to win trophies.
“I don’t want to be shy about it, we have a great team being built so why shouldn’t we want to succeed in every way possible. Individually, that will all come when I’m playing well.
“The first job is to get into the training with the boys and make sure I fit in well, so I can’t wait!”
It’s been a busy off-season in Wanderland. Borrello’s arrival takes head coach Mark Rudan’s signing spree to 15, with 14 players heading out the exit door thus far.
It’s Rudan’s first full off-season in charge of the Wanderers after taking the reins in the midst of the 2021-22 campaign. The Western Sydney head coach says he’s eager to see what Borrello can bring to his new-look squad over the course of his two-season contract.
“We are delighted to have a player of Brandon’s calibre in Western Sydney and are proud to bring him back to the A-Leagues competition,” Rudan said.
“Brandon’s experience in Germany over the last five years have no doubt taken his game to another level and we are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the side over the next two seasons.”
