THE ROLE OF A SYDNEY STAR IN CLOUGH’S MOVE TO THE A-LEAGUES
Head coach: Carl Veart
Stadium: Coopers Stadium
2021-22 position: 4th (semi-finals)
Spearheaded by South Australian product and captain Craig Goodwin, Adelaide came within a whisker of the Grand Final last season after falling to Melbourne City in extra time of the Semi-Final.
Commentator’s call
Michael Zappone
“I don’t think coach Carl Veart gets enough credit. He’s been brilliant in identifying young talent, bringing them in and giving them game time.
“Joeys midfielder Nestory Irankunda was brilliant last season, and he’ll be part of the squad this year. Aleksandar Popovic is another one to watch, a really mature head on young shoulders.”
“The players they’re missing this year is a cause for concern. Kusini Yengi Mohamed Toure and Yaya Dukuly are all young players with huge potential that have decided to move on.
They over-achieved last campaign, Think they’ll make the finals this year, but won’t be as strong with the players they’ve lost.
Ex-player’s view
Robbie Cornthwaite
“A very settled side, very much the side we’ve seen over the last season or two, and you know what you’re going to get from Craig Goodwin and Ben Halloran.
“There’s no hiding from the fact they haven’t been able to go the extra step in the past, and who are going to be the players that are able to raise their level to give Adelaide that extra five or 10 per cent?
I’m going to make a big point about Zach Clough. A lot of the talk out of Adelaide – and I’ve spoken to Zach – he’s fitter than he’s ever been, he trained in the off-season in Dubai with Declan Rice, the West Ham captain, and Matty Cash from Aston Villa. He’s come back in super shape. Even Craig Goodwin has come out in the media and said Zach Clough is looking really, really good, so hopefully Adelaide sees a bit more from him – he’s one that can really give Adelaide that extra five per cent they need.
“I think the most exciting player for me, as good as he’s been already, I think he’s the guy with the biggest upside and could go on and have the biggest career: Joe Gauci. I’m really excited to see where he can get to in his career.”
