Wanderers name Marcelo ALM captain

Brazilian defender Marcelo will captain Western Sydney Wanderers in his first season at the A-League Men club.

The new-look Wanderers are attempting to end a five-year finals drought, with 35-year-old Marcelo seen as a key to bolstering their defence.

Marcelo has previously played for clubs including Wisla Krakow, PSV Eindhoven, Hannover 96, Besiktas, Lyon and Bordeaux.

“We have many leaders in our squad this season with a number of experienced players that could have filled this role,” coach Marko Rudan said in a statement.

“Marcelo has been a stand-out since his arrival at the club and has an unmatched global experience.

“We hope that he can continue his success here in Western Sydney as we build towards a very important season ahead.”

Marcelo headlines a number of senior signings at Western Sydney, including ex-Central Coast skipper Oliver Bozanic and former Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.

“I would firstly like to thank head coach Marko Rudan for the opportunity in not only bringing me to the Western Sydney Wanderers but also for naming me as captain of this incredible club,” Marcelo said.

“Since the first day I arrived, I have been accepted as part of the family and it is an honour to lead the team this season.”
