Queensland Roar coach Rado Vidosic was an understandably happy man after watching his charges make it two National Youth League wins from three outings, with a comprehensive 3-0 result against Newcastle on Sunday.

The Roar held the upper hand for the vast majority of the 90 minutes and Vidosic was particularly pleased with the display of fleet-footed midfielder Michael Zullo.

“I was very happy with the performance. I think they performed really well, especially after the first 25 minutes,” Vidosic said.

“It was probably a little bit difficult – it’s the first time these boys have played together, but once they got going they were really good to watch and I enjoyed it.”

“Michael Zullo was outstanding – a constant threat for their defence and catalyst for our good openings and penetration on the left hand side.”

The Roar played the last 18 minutes of the match with 10 men after Tyler Thurtell was dismissed for picking up a second yellow card.

The final goal of the match, scored by Chris Grossman, came with the Roar a man short, but Vidosic would like to see his side control the tempo a little more if faced with a similar situation in the future.

“I don’t think we controlled the game that well after (the send-off),” Vidosic said.

“The last few minutes we exposed them a little bit and that’s when we scored the last goal.”

“But I think we should have controlled the game a little bit better – keeping the ball and not letting them come close to us and close us down with the (extra) numbers.”
