Sam Kerr back doing what she does best for high-flying Chelsea

Sam Kerr scored her second goal of the WSL season as defending champions Chelsea topped Everton.

Sam Kerr found the back of the net as unbeaten Women’s Super League (WSL) champions Chelsea defeated Everton 3-0.

Kerr scored five goals in three games for the Matildas during their recent AFC Olympic Games qualifiers in Perth, but the superstar striker scored just her second goal of the WSL season on Monday (AEDT).

The A-Leagues legend produced a trademark goal to double Chelsea’s lead after Jessie Fleming had put the league leaders ahead away to Clare Wheeler’s Everton.

Timing her run to perfection, Kerr got on the end of Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s cross as she poked the ball into the back of the net in the 62nd minute.

Former Everton loanee Aggie Beever-Jones also scored as Chelsea shrugged aside the attention surrounding Emma Hayes’ impending departure.

Chelsea were playing for the first time since the announcement last weekend that Hayes will step down at the end of the season after 12 years as manager, remained unbeaten and three points clear of the chasing pack as a result.

That is due in part to a surprise defeat for Manchester City, who headed into the weekend in second place and three points adrift of the leaders.

Lee Geum-min returned to haunt her former club when she fired Brighton to a 1-0 win over Gareth Taylor’s team at the City Football Academy, where Matildas pair Mary Fowler and Alanna Kennedy both started.

The South Korea international scored the game’s only goal nine minutes from time as title hopefuls City were made to pay for not making the most of their dominance and slipped to a second successive league defeat in the process.
