Brisbane Roar have cashed in on teenage defender Diesel Herrington, receiving an undisclosed fee from Danish Superliga outfit AGF.
Herrington spent five years with Roar’s Academy, emerging from the Under-14s in 2017, and going on to play for the NPL team.
The 18-year-old will now test himself abroad, joining former Roar midfielder Zach Duncan at AGF after signing a four-year contract.
Herrington will start with the Under-19 team.
“Diesel is a very accomplished young centre-back, physically very strong and has plenty of qualities to make it in the professional game,” said Roar head coach Warren Moon.
“Diesel is one of the first players to come through the Academy system from U14’s to NPL and be signed by an overseas club.
“As a club we’re proud not only of Diesel but we’re proud to again be achieving one of the key missions of the Academy and of this football club.
“What this signing further demonstrates is that while our Academy is only five years old, we’re starting to see the fruits of our labour with players graduating to the first team, to opportunities overseas and getting picked for junior national teams.”
NPL head coach Chris Grossman added: “Diesel has developed extremely well over the past 18 months.
“He’s a player with the right attributes to make it as a professional footballer. He’s tall, he’s quick across the ground and he can defend.
“He’s still got things to work on, but in that environment [in Denmark] it’ll take his game to the next level and I look forward to seeing his development.”
