Perth Glory finalise temporary home ground

Perth Glory will begin the 2022-23 Isuzu UTE A-League Men season playing home fixtures at Stirling’s Macedonia Park, following a construction delay in the $35million redevelopment of HBF Park.

Upgrades to the club’s regular home for A-League Men fixtures were originally scheduled to be completed in December, with the Venues West stadium undergoing development before hosting FIFA Women’s World Cup fixtures in July and August of 2023.

But delays have resulted in HBF Park being unavailable until March, putting 10 Glory home games at risk.

The club have since secured access to Macedonia Park, which is set to receive immediate investment from the Western Australian state government to accommodate increased capacity requirements with temporary stands, enhanced lighting for broadcast purposes as well as improved parking and access.

Perth Glory CEO Anthony Radich said: “We have been confronted by a unique set of challenges caused by circumstances completely beyond our control. Our Members and fans were our primary
consideration throughout the decision-making process and there was no perfect outcome.

“As well as needing a rectangular venue, we wanted to avoid having to play “home” fixtures on the east coast given that our members and fans have been deprived of normality in terms of home games for the past two years.

“Macedonia Park is an historic football venue, and we look forward to making it our home. We are going to create the best possible fan experience and hope to turn the venue purple every match.”

A-Leagues commissioner Greg O’Rourke added: “The impact of this construction delay is considerable on Perth Glory, its members, sponsors and partners and it was vital to ensure they were able play in their home city.”

The upgrades at Macedonia Park have resulted in fixture changes as the work is completed in October and November.

Perth’s home game against Central Coast Mariners planned for October 23 will now be played in Gosford, with Perth’s away trip to face the Mariners on February 19 becoming a home fixture. Perth’s home game against Brisbane Roar scheduled for November 13 will be moved to a later date in the season.
