Master and apprentice reunite as Fergie visits Yorke’s Macarthur

For a second Dwight Yorke could have been taken back almost 25 years, and 16,000km.

For a moment the Sir Alex Ferguson glare was back, the one that drove Yorke and his Manchester United team-mates to unprecedented success in the Premier League and in Europe.

Now, though, Ferguson was on the pitch at Campbelltown Stadium, visiting to see how his old protégé Yorke was adapting to management in his first season with Macarthur FC while on holiday in Australia.

Simultaneously agog and nervous, the Macarthur players sought selfies with the great man and then gathered for a team photo.

“Any stories about the boss,” Ferguson was asked and the inference was clear – did he misbehave?

For a moment Ferguson stared back. “When we won the treble he was the best striker in Europe,” he growled. Then the glare dissolved into a grin. “Then he got into the good life!”

Yorke is unsure whether Ferguson will attend Saturday night’s clash with Sydney FC at Campbelltown Stadium – “I don’t like to impose too much,” the Macarthur boss said simply.

But the master and the apprentice then adjourned for lunch together, with much to discuss now both are members of the managers’ union.
