Jets score four against Roar

The Newcastle Jets staked their claim for a finals position, scoring their fourth win in seven matches this season; their first at home against Brisbane in the history of the Westfield W-League, with a convincing 4-1 win.

The opening half hour of the match was extremely flat, as both sides struggled to deal with the 38 degree Broadmeadow heat. It was the away side however, who were creating the best of the chances, boosted by their 100% winning record in Newcastle.

The home side then fought back into the game, finding themselves 2-0 ahead after a quick-fire double for the side through Tori Huster (36’) and Emily van Egmond (37’).

The Roar went into the break trailing by two goals to nil, and knew that they would need a quick reply when the match resumed in the second half.

Their day went from bad to worse, however, after some great pressure from Newcastle’s Huster forced a goal mouth scramble, where the Roar consequently knocked the ball into their own net, making the score 3-0 in the 48th minute.

Roar substitute Larissa Crummer was introduced into the match in the 62nd minute, and after just four minutes saw yellow for bringing down Georgia Yeoman-Dale in the box, giving away a penalty which van Egmond easily slotted into the bottom right hand corner.

Brisbane managed a late consolation goal through winger Tameka Butt, making the score 4-1 in the 90th minute.

Although the Jets were both impressive and clinical in the front third, it was keeper Claire Coelho who was the sides’ standout. Gifted a starting opportunity after regular Hannah Southwell was ruled out in the warm-up with a hip injury, Coelho made the most of her chance producing eleven crucial saves, nine of which were in the second half.

The Jets maintained their top four position with the win, however the Roar still have just one win to their name, stuck at the wrong end of the table on four points.
