Head coach: Ufuk Talay

Wellington, despite COVID-19 forcing them to call Australia home for most of the season, finished in the top six again but fell at the first hurdle against eventual champions Western United.

Commentator’s call

Robbie Thomson

“Last season they had so many problems, with being stuck here in Australia due to the pandemic. When they lost, they lost heavily, and that to me showed the emotional strain of playing in exile.

This season they’ve lost key players like Rene Piscopo and Gary Hooper. But Ufuk Talay recruits well every year and they have Bulgarian and Brazilian N.10s arriving, in Bozhidar Kraev and Yan Sasse, plus you saw last year the incredible resilience that Talay can create.

“If they can build some home form in New Zealand, they’ll be in finals contention again.”

Signings: Steven Ugarkovic (Western Sydney Wanderers), Kosta Barbarouses (Sydney FC), Lucas Mauragis (on loan from Newcastle Jets), Bozhidar Kraev (Midtjylland), Yan Sasse (America Mineiro), Oskar Zawada (Stal Mielec)

Departures: Reno Piscopo (Newcastle Jets), Jaushua Sotirio (Newcastle Jets), Gael Sandoval (Guadalajara), Gary Hooper, James McGarry (Newcastle Jets), Matthew Bozinovski, Kurtis Mogg, George Ott
