Commentator’s call

Michael Zappone

“It was an extraordinary turnaround for Victory last season, which just highlights how good a coach Tony Popovic is.

“Nani is going to take the league by storm. Chris Ikonomidis is almost like a new recruit and a fit Tomi Juric will be a huge signing. Their midfield is one of the best in the league with Rai Marchan, Josh Brillante and Jake Brimmer.

“One of their weak points last year was keeper Ivan Kelava, and bringing in Paul Izzo is going to help them a lot.

That fire is there. They’ll be hurting from losing to Western United last year. For me, they’re the favourites to win the title this season.

Signings: George Timotheou (Adelaide United), Noah Smith (Central Coast Mariners), Tomi Juric (Macarthur FC), Eli Adams (Brisbane Roar), Ahmad Taleb (Melbourne City), Paul Izzo (Xanthi), Nani (Venezia), Enrique Lopez (FC Astana), Nathan Konstandopoulos (Adelaide United)

Departures: Robbie Kruse, Jason Davidson (Eupen), Brendan Hamill (ATK Mohun Bagan), Francesco Margiotta, Ivan Kelava, Marco Rojas (Colo-Colo)

Re-signings: Leigh Broxham, Rai Marchan, Will Wilson, Matthew Spiranovic, Jason Geria
