Irankunda at the double as Joeys qualify for 2023 AFC U17 Asian Cup

Another game and another dominant display from Adelaide United teenager Nestory Irankunda helped the Joeys book their ticket to the 2023 AFC Under-17 Asian Cup.

Irankunda scored twice for the Australia U17 side, who defeated 10-man China 3-1 to clinch top spot in Group G on Sunday and automatic qualification to next year’s tournament.

The 16-year-old sensation, who has dazzled in the Isuzu UTE A-League with the Reds, also provided an assist for Miguel Di Pizio’s sealer in Shepparton.

Irankunda, who scored four goals in the opening match, set the tone when he broke the deadlock via the penalty spot inside seven minutes after dribbling past three defenders before being fouled.

The Joeys were awarded another penalty in the 23rd minute but Max Hately missed, having slipped at the critical moment.

Australia were made to pay as Wang Yudong tapped home the equaliser two minutes later.

After China were reduced to 10 men when Cui Taixu’s stray boot caught the face of Irankunda five minutes into the second half, the latter steered a shot past the goalkeeper with 25 minutes remaining.

And 10 minutes later, Irankunda teed up Central Coast Mariners midfielder Di Pizio – who found the back of the net from distance.
