‘I love the attacking style of football they play’: Buhagiar becomes a Jet

After the signing of Reno Piscopo, Newcastle Jets have bolstered their attacking stocks with the arrival of Trent Buhagiar on a two-year deal.

Buhagiar makes the move to the Jets following his Sydney FC exit at the end of the 2021-22 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The 24-year-old is the third new signing in Newcastle, after Piscopo from Wellington Phoenix and former Perth Glory captain Brandon O’Neill as the Jets strengthen on the back of Daniel Penha’s departure.

“I’m really looking forward to playing for the Jets because it’s a fresh start for me and I’m looking forward to learning from the coaching staff here,” Buhagiar said.

“I love the attacking style of football they play here under Arthur and I’m looking forward to further developing my game under him.”

Buhagiar emerged from Central Coast Mariners’ Academy in 2016 and scored four goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.

The ex-Australia Under-23 international won the ALM Championship and Premiership at Sydney FC, where he netted 15 times in 53 matches.

In 2021-22 across all competitions, Buhagiar scored eight goals, including two in the AFC Champions League.

Jets manager Arthur Papas said: “We are excited to secure the signature of Trent Buhagiar, having watched Trent first-hand whilst at the Asian Champions League in Qatar two years ago.

“What impressed me was his speed combined with his timing to make runs in behind the opponent defensive lines and he ended up finishing top scorer in the group stages at the time, so I’m delighted he has decided to join the Jets.

“We believe that Trent possesses all the attributes to become quite prolific and helping us to become even more potent in front of goals.”
