Denmark awaits AGF-bound McNamara with the World Cup in full view

Matilda McNamara is off to Europe, with the Adelaide United star to join AGF in the Danish Women’s League.

A defensive stalwart for Adelaide in the Liberty A-League, McNamara featured in all 27 matches across the past two seasons – scoring three goals.

The 23-year-old is eyeing next year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.

McNamara was called up by the Matildas for the first time last month.

“I’m extremely grateful for my time with Adelaide United and feel like I’ve improved a lot since returning to the team in 2019,” said McNamara.

“My goal has always been to play abroad and I believe now is the right time in my career to take that next step and challenge myself.

“Having overseas experience will also help in my development as a footballer and person, and hopefully increase my chances of representing the Matildas especially with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 occurring next year.”

McNamara made her senior debut for Adelaide in 2015.

She scored twice in 15 appearances last season as the Reds reached the ALW semi-finals.

McNamara tallied 33 matches across two spells with Adelaide.

“Matilda has been a resolute presence at the back for us for a couple of seasons now and deserves this opportunity,” said Adelaide head coach Adrian Stenta.

“However, as a club, we’ll never stand in the way of a player looking to better themselves by moving overseas.

“Hopefully Matilda will still be able to play some role for us in the upcoming 2022-23 season, but we’ll have a better understanding about that possibility later in the year.”
