Warren Joyce isn’t daunted by a tough quarter-final draw in the Westfield FFA Cup with his side set to face the side they beat in last year’s Cup Final.
HEAVYWEIGHT LAST EIGHT CLASH
The Cup holders will travel to the Harbour City to meet Sydney FC in an enticing repeat of last year’s final.
“You want to test yourself against the better sides,” City’s new boss told Fox Sports after the draw was made.
“Obviously they had a tremendous season last season.
“We’re looking forward to the opportunity of going there and testing ourselves against a good team,” he said.
DISAPPOINTED WITH DEFENSIVE ‘CONCENTRATION’
“Pleased with a bright start and some reasonable football and obviously [to] get a goal up you think that settles us to go on and play some football and have a good shape about us,” he said after Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Hakoah in the Round of 16.
“But disappointing to give a cheap goal away; I thought it was an avoidable goal, lack of concentration and poor marking in the box and that gives them hope and the [home] crowd hope and made it more exciting than it needed to be, really.
“To get another goal obviously we were back in the driving seat but there were a couple of times we were sloppy and made it easy for them to have opportunities and efforts at goal.
“To be fair to them I thought… [they played like] it was their final tonight and they’re going to approach it like that and they certainly did,” he said of Hakoah
“They [Hakoah] gave a good account of themselves and were very competitive and had some pace and power in the side and were organised and credit to their staff for the way they played.”
CITY’S SKIPPER SCARE
Melbourne City secured their passage to the last eight with a 3-2 win over Hakoah Sydney City East at Leichhardt Oval.
But it may have come at a price with Bruno Fornaroli stretchered off the field in the first half.
The star Uruguayan striker was felled by a heavy tackle and taken to hospital for scans on his ankle.
“We don’t really know,” Joyce admitted when asked about the seriousness of his skipper’s injury.
“He’s gone away for an x-ray so we’ll probably find out more information when we get back to the hotel.”
