Brisbane boost attacking stocks with arrival of ‘exciting, young’ Austrian

Brisbane Roar have made their first move of the January transfer window, bolstering their attack with the signing of Austrian attacking midfielder Marcel Canadi.

The 25-year-old joins the club from Croatian first division side HNK Sibenik, featuring 11 times in all competitions during his short stint in the HNL.

“It’s a new step, a new experience being from Europe,” Canadi said.

“It’s the first time I’ve been so far away from home but I’m excited and can’t wait to get started.”

“I have a good feeling that I will get along very quickly with the team.”

Prior to moving to Croatia, Canadi spent time with Austrian outfits SV Ried, Amstetten and Austria Lustenau, along with Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach’s youth team.

“He’s an exciting young attacker who has plied his trade in Europe and comes to us at a good age, very technical and very mobile,” Roar coach Warren Moon said.

“He has the ability to play a number of positions.

“We can play him higher up the park as an attacking midfielder, he can play wide but also as a bit deeper so that is good for us.”

Moon has spoken at length about the Roar needing to bring in attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window, particularly after the departure of English striker Charlie Austin.

Young striker Cyrus Dehmie also sealed a move away from the club to Danish second-tier outfit Næstved Boldklub.
