Adelaide snare Danish international

A Denmark international who is regarded alongside legendary goal-keeper Peter Schmeichel in her homeland has joined Adelaide United for the upcoming Westfield W-League season.

In a huge boost to Ross Aloisi’s Reds’ revolution, the club have signed 210-cap Danish international Katrine Pedersen for the upcoming campaign which starts next month.

The versatile 37-year-old, who can play in defence or central midfield, will bring much needed experience to Aloisi’s batch of impressive youngsters at the Reds.

“(Lady Reds player) Kristy Moore played with Katrine and (Norway international) Lisa-Marie Woods has as well,’’ Aloisi told the Adelaide Advertiser.

“Everyone who has spoken about her said she is a true professional and obviously she captained Denmark for a very long, long time.

“She is training with a men’s team at the moment in an effort to be fit and in good condition when she arrives.

“Because we have such a young group and a four-year plan we need good role models who are also good footballers. She has more than exceeded that criteria. She ticks all the boxes.”

Pedersen made her international debut for Denmark way back in 1994 and was part of their squad at last year’s Women’s European Championships.

She also took out the country’s Player of the Year award.

Pedersen is due to arrive with her family in just under two weeks ahead of Adelaide’s season-opener against Sydney FC on Sunday, September 14.
