‘I hope I can lead the team to a title!’: Wanderers sign Women’s Championship winner

Matildas Chloe Logarzo, Emily Gielnik and Elise Kellond-Knight have all spoken about the positive news that the Liberty Pass will be available this upcoming season.

Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of Women’s Championship winner Vicky Bruce for the upcoming Liberty A-League season.

The American defender arrives at the club off the back of an impressive campaign with Bristol City in England’s second division, where she started in almost every single game en route to a first place finish.

Bruce has experience playing at the highest level for a number of clubs including SC Sand, Fortuna Hjørring, Morön BK, Apollon Ladies FC and Fimleikafélag Hafnarfarðar.

She’s also tallied seven UEFA Women’s Champions League appearances, and won the Kvlindeliga in Denmark.

“I’ve heard nothing but good things about the A-Leagues. A lot of my friends, competitors or former teammates have played in Australia and they have raved about it,” Bruce said.

“The league is known for having a high standard and its professionalism, so I’m really excited to be part of that culture. I know the Wanderers are incredibly competitive and put up a good fight every game.

“This season, I’m hoping to become not just a better player, but a better person and teammate.

“It would be amazing to make Player of the Week or get accolades for my achievements, but there is so much more to it than that. I want to make a difference on and off the pitch for the Wanderers.

“Having played professionally abroad for over seven years, I have a lot of useful advice and wisdom that I can share. I want to support my teammates in any way that I can and I hope I can help lead the team to a title!”

Wanderers coach Kat Smith said she’s looking forward to integrating Bruce into the side this season.

“Vicky has considerable experience of playing at the highest level, so I’m confident that she will be an excellent addition to our squad,” Smith said.

“Vicky, whose ability to play from the back, will fit into our system and style of play, thanks to the great mix of technical ability and physical attributes.

“She (Vicky) is entering her prime and will bring quality and depth to our defensive unit, and we are so pleased to have her join the Wanderers.”

Bruce is the club’s third new off-season arrival, joining Madison McComasky (Canberra United) and India Breier (Macarthur Rams).

Western Sydney kick-off their new campaign against Sydney FC on October 14 at Allianz Stadium.
