Socceroo returns to Perth, signs for Glory ahead of A-Leagues season

Perth Glory have announced the signing of Aleksandar Susnjar, who will return to the Isuzu UTE A-League for the 2023-24 season.

The 28-year-old West Australian centre-back joins the club after chalking up 50 appearances during a three season stint at Macarthur FC, joining as a foundation player.

He previously played all over Europe in Lithuania, Romania, Czechia and Slovakia, before spending time in South Korea, helping Busan IPark secure promotion to K-League 1.

Susnjar is also a one-time Socceroo, debuting for the national team in a friendly against Norway after previously being capped at Under-23 level and for Serbia at Under-17 level.

After only making a handful of appearances last season, the towering defender is hoping to turn a new chapter in his career back home in WA, returning to the club he played for as a junior.

“Coming back home is something that I’ve always considered but just haven’t had the opportunity to do,” he said.

“Last year was a bit of a hard year for me, but coming back to Perth and being around family, I feel like I can get back on the park and keep moving forward.

“Personally, I’m here to do my best and help the team.

“Working together, I think aiming for the finals is something that’s achievable for us.

“I went to Glory games when I was a kid and did a year in the youth academy, so I’ve been around the club before and I’ve always followed the A-League, so I know what’s going on.”

New Glory coach Alen Stajcic said he’s looking forward to Susnjar’s arrival.

“We’re excited to bring a Perth junior back to the A-League and back to our club to bolster our defensive stocks,” he said.

“Aleks will add a vast amount of experience into our team having played in both Europe and in the A-League and made over 200 first team appearances.

“Having another Perth local re-connect with our club is an important part of our vision moving forward.”

Susnjar is the club’s second off-season signing, joining former Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Oli Sail as Glory’s latest arrival.

Perth open their season against Newcastle Jets on Sunday October 22 at HBF Park.
