Roar sign NPL Golden Boot winner who is also the son of a Socceroos great

Brisbane Roar have signed NPL Victoria Golden Boot winner Jonas Markovski ahead of the upcoming Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Markovski joins the club after a breakout season with Altona Magic, where he scored 19 goals for the club en route to their first finals appearance in the NPL era.

The 24-year-old attacker is also the son of Australian football legend, John, who made 20 appearances for the Socceroos and represented Australia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. John also coached him at Altona last season, along with Jonas’ brother Joshua.

The attacker described the move as “a dream come true”.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be in the league, to have an opportunity to play under Ross and all these great players, I’m looking forward to the season,” Markovski said.

Coach Ross Aloisi said he’s looking forward to adding the attacker to the squad.

“He did really well in NPL Victoria in a team that finished fifth and to win the Golden Boot goes to show that he is a goal scorer,” he said.

“It’s something that we’re looking to bring into the team, not just a player that is going to work hard but also someone that is a proven goal scorer and winner.”

Markovski’s arrival helps reinforce Brisbane’s attack heading into the upcoming season and will almost certainly provide strong competition for 18-year-old Thomas Waddingham who has led the line during their run to the Australia Cup semi-finals.

He’s also the second son of an Aussie legend to join the club, after Shae Cahill – son of Tim – signed with Brisbane this off-season.

Roar will look to book their place in the Cup final, when they head on the road to face NPL Victoria side Melbourne Knights on Sunday evening.
