The A-Leagues represent the pinnacle of professional football in Australia, comprising men’s, women’s, youth and e-sports competitions.
The A-Leagues is operated by the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) which is owned by the clubs along with a private investor in Silver Lake. The APL Board is comprised of representatives of the clubs, Football Australia and Silver Lake along with an independent Chair.
Since gaining independence from Football Australia at the start of 2021, APL has embarked on an ambitious strategy to drive engagement with men’s and women’s elite football and build on football’s undisputed position as the country’s most popular participation sport.
The A-League was established as the premier men’s football competition in the country in the 2005 following the ceasing of the National Soccer League. In 2008, the W-League was established as the premier women’s football competition.
Following both competitions’ rebranding in 2021, the A-Leagues now comprises 12 teams in both the Isuzu UTE A-League Men and the Liberty A-League Women across Australia and New Zealand. Expansion of the A-Leagues with new clubs in additional football markets across Australasia is a critical part of APL’s forward strategy.
Guided by a vision to unite, entertain and grow the football audience in Australia, the A-Leagues showcase the most inclusive, welcoming and truly national sport.
That alone is worth celebrating.
